New horizons for Groningen with 5G – Presented by Peter Rake, Economic Board Groningen, at the Internet of People Event, which will take place on 23 November 2018, at Studio HvA Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

A unique experiment is taking place in the North of Groningen. Top players from the telecom industry (Vodafone, KPN, Huawei, Ericsson) and renowned research institutes (TNO, RUG, SURF, Hanzehogeschool, Agentschap Telecom) collaborate together with the Economic Board Groningen to develop a living lab for 5G, the latest generation of mobile internet. The 5G fieldlab offers opportunities for entrepreneurs around the region to test their own innovations in an environment with excellent facilities, both technical and financial. This rural field lab is the only one in its kind. Experience together how innovative entrepreneurs from this region become perform exciting tests and become frontrunner in the newest applications with 5G.

What drives you?

Internet-of-things / hydrogen as enabler of sustainable energy / food production without exhausting natural resources

What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
Connecting people with each other and with their environment / transition to clean energy / feed the world and its future inhabitants

What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
Risk of privacy and security issues / nationalism by autocratic leaders / powerful fossile lobby / unbalanced spread of welfare

New technology can create new opportunities for everyone

In the following years we will see an entirely new Internet emerging, as the Internet unleashes itself from the creators’ intentions and develops in transformative ways.
